The show will follow the first campaign of Critical Role, starting before the beginning of the webseries, following Vox Machina, a group of mercenaries hired to find and kill whatever beast has been laying waste to nearby farmlands. A combination of talented cast members, many of whom are reprising their roles from the webseries, and mature yet colorful animation brings the story to life in a way that feels wonderfully different as great as it's been imagining these characters battling dark forces in Exandria, it is fulfilling to finally see them in motion on the screen.

Blood and banter combine to create a story that is both comedic and heartful, where the characters feel real despite the fantastical setting. It’s a reminder of the fragility of life and the consequences of looking away, but also of a childhood home from long ago, that was ripped away in the blazes of Dragonfire.Based on Critical Role, a Dungeons & Dragons web series starring Matthew Mercer, Ashley Johnson, Travis Willingham, Laura Bailey, Liam O'Brien, Taliesin Jaffe, Marisha Ray, and Sam Riegel, The Legend of Vox Machina follows a group of mismatched friends as they desperately pay off a bar tab and end up on a quest to save the entire realm. The child of the village that asks for a magic trick later dies in the arms of a horrified half-elf – it’s heartbreaking and sad, but, more than anything, it is a reminder. Instead, viewers are privy to the terrible aftermath of the evil that Vox Machina is pitted against, death becomes a slow and visceral thing, as do the moments after when the main characters are forced to reconcile with the harsh reality of their situation. The villagers’ purpose in the story is neither comedic nor trivial, and so neither are their deaths. While, like the opening adventurers, their purpose in the story is to die, it is in order to further the evolution and characterization of the members of Vox Machina. In contrast, the deaths of the villagers in Episode 1 are given ample time to sink in, as were the characters themselves when Vox Machina first arrived in their village. As much as the characters despair over their losses, they also keep living and the weight of death remains a reminder, but not a hindrance. The characters react realistically, partially because the original media, Critical Role, involved live people making decisions based on their emotional responses to certain scenes. It humanizes the story and characters (even if not all of them are human). In doing this, the show leaves room for the characters to continue to make jokes and have fun, keeping it primarily a comedy, while still offering the heavier topics portrayed the level of respect they deserve. Instead, they work to develop the characters’ views on the world and shift their intentions from getting all the money they can to actually helping those in need. What makes The Legend of Vox Machina such a perfect balance of comedy and horror is that the horrors that the characters witness are not discarded or treated as just another layer of dark comedy. The beauty of The Legend of Vox Machina, other than its wonderful cast and amazing artwork, is that, even after an episode that ends in blood and piles of burnt bodies, the show is able to jump right back to comedy, without it feeling like the show is trivializing the tragedy of the prior episode. RELATED: 'The Legend of Vox Machina' Cast and Character Guide It’s a disturbing scene, riding on the tail end of a disastrous battle with a giant dragon, and, while the group was once ready to give up and go home, they now find themselves overcome with a bitter determination to finish the job. From the beginning, it’s clear that the group is only in it for the money and, while none of them are explicitly bad people, the helping of others is only secondary to a monetary reward.Īnd yet, by the end of the first episode, the viewer is left in a state of sorrowful solidarity with the group, as they stand amongst the remains of a ruined village, the burnt corpses of people they had met only hours before still smoldering where they lie. They answer an advertisement put up by the Tal'Dorei Council to slay whatever beast has been terrorizing the nearby farmlands. In fact, the only reason the members of Vox Machina are even caught up in a heroic quest in the first place is that they waste all of their funds drinking after being kicked out of yet another tavern for destroying the place in a bar fight (and, in the case of one character, sleeping with the tavern keeper's daughter) the group decides to try their luck at some mercenary work.
